Whisper Valley is a 2000-acre "agri-hood" - an agriculture focused + energy net-zero master planned community located outside of Austin, Texas, incorporating geothermal and solar in every home; the largest development of it's kind in the US. The Fremont Community Garden is located adjacent to the Fremont Mews Apartments in mid-town Sacramento. This project was completed in 2005 and has become a popular community gathering spot. The garden is completely organic and the 52 plots are ‘rented’ on a yearly basis by residents of the City for the purpose of enjoying the pleasures of gardening and reaping the harvest. The South Congress Hotel (SoCoHo) is a 83-room boutique hotel located along the uber cool South Congress corridor in 78704. The hotel incorporates 3 restaurants and is a throwback to old Austin, keeping the character of the South Austin neighborhood alive and well with its residential scaled use of exterior finishes and retro interior finishes. The final phase of the Stony Point Road project is nearing completion this year. Working with the City of Santa Rosa, services included the design and construction of three phases of the innovative Stony Point widening project, which includes traffic calming measures, extra lanes, dedicated bicycle lanes, innovative rain gardens and tree wells to function as water quality treatment and a landscaped median. Austin's oldest craft brewery and a local institution, Live Oak Brewery built their new home on 20 beautiful oak-studded acres along the Colorado River near the Airport. The new space includes an expanded production and canning facility, tasting room and brew pub. Not to mention an amazing beer garden under the oaks, local rotating food trucks and soon to be constructed disc golf course makes this spot a crowd-pleaser. In partnership with Ducks Unlimited, multiple fish ladders and water control weirs were added to the Sutter Bypass of the Sacramento River Delta, one of the primary stop-overs for migratory birds in the Pacific Flyaway. With generous funding from Ducks Unlimited and oversight from Glenn-Colusa Irrigation District, this project proved a major water resource and conservation success in allowing salmon to migrate to their natural spawning areas, while also providing restoration of natural wetland areas in the Delta. The University of Texas LBJ Wildflower Centers Children's Garden draws kids of all ages to marvel in the wildflowers and nature within the heart of South Austin. The 5-acre Children's Garden expansion was completed in 2015 and was a pilot project for the Sustainable SITES Initiative, earning a gold rating, incorporating rain water harvesting, green roofs and extensive native material re-use. The Garden includes extensive walking + nature trails, an outdoor amphitheater, a stone waterfall and grotto, a tree canopy walk, interactive exhibits and display buildings, a wide variety of children play-scapes, and vast gardens featuring an impressive display of native central Texas species. / Photo: www.wildflower.org / Partners: University of Texas TBG Landscape Architecture Big Red Dog Engineering
Sonoma is a small picturesque town in the heart of wine-county in northern California. Services provided to the City included construction management and inspections on the historic downtown plaza, municipal engineering and design, solar installations, streetscape and ADA improvements, trail improvements and city-wide landscape improvement projects. In 2006, the owner worked with Engineers Without Borders, helping with education in a local community about sustainable agriculture, forestry and land management. Communities can cultivate, harvest, and source forests in ways that not only conserve, but achieve net-zero deforestation. Strong communities equate to conservation and strong rainforests. Between 1999 and 2002, the owner worked with the California State Department of Transportation, providing construction inspection and administration to a wide-variety of highway rehabilitation and water resource projects. Lettuce Network is a Yard-To-Table organic and urban agriculture commercial farming company with the mission to make health food accessible to all; by bridging the food divide and alleviating the food insecurity issues in cities around the country, starting with Austin, Texas. Mountain Sun has teamed up to help locate commercial production land, and establish partnerships with neighborhood farms, businesses and restaurants around the city. / Partners: City of Austin Office of Sustainability
Devonshire Village is a 20-acre affordable housing project in partnership with the City of Austin and the Austin Habitat For Humanity. The homes were built by the future residents with the help of the local community and numerous corporate volunteers. The San Antonio River Improvement Project is a very notable and visible restoration effort near the heart of San Antonio. With the intent to restore the original ecological function to the waterway, as well as provide public amenities such as nature trails, bike paths and recreation access point; the project has been a huge success. Foskett Ranch is a 90-acre master planned community in the Sierra Nevada foothills outside of Sacramento, California. Completed in 2005, the community includes 20+ acres of dedicated parks and open-space and an elementary school. The site contained numerous sensitive and critical environmental features, including century-old oak trees and wetland habitat - which were all preserved and incorporated into the site planning at the early phases. The former ship-yard is planned for re-development after environmental clean-up and mitigation. This iconic spot sits just south of the Mission District in San Francisco will be a model for what the future of high-density, pedestrian/transit friendly development in-fill can and should be, in a City known for its extreme lack of affordable housing options. The new PKP Fraternity House is currently under construction with expected completion for Summer 2017. The design includes an innovative underground rainwater harvesting system. The Concord is a 300-unit multi-family project developed by Aspen Heights in South Austin. The project beautifully blends with the natural landscape on the 20+ acres of oak trees. Incorporating the natural elements of the land was a top priority during planning and design, incorporating a hiking trail and a large dog park along the creek area. The Medical Towers of Sawyer Ranch is a Hat-Trick Development Project in the rolling hill country west of Austin, Texas. Construction was completed in 2016 for this complex which houses much needed medical offices and emergency services for the local community. The Lantana Ridge Office Complex is within the environmentally sensitive Barton Springs Zone of the Edwards Aquifer off of Southwest Parkway west of Austin, Texas. The 175,000-SF of office space is being developed by the Lincoln Property Company. Working in cooperation with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the City of Austin and in accordance with Save Our Springs (SOS) we designed innovative water quality controls to treat the stormwater run-off such as rainwater harvesting and a retention + re-irrigation system to recharge the aquifer after rainfall events. Construction is currently in progress. The pilot project for the new Leander Transit Oriented Development plan, we worked with the City and the developer, American Realty to design a high-density 225-unit multi-family product that also blended in seamlessly to the environment nestled along a creek on 9.5 acres. The Standard is adjacent to the Leander Station and the future Austin Community College campus. The project includes public space for outdoor events and community gardens. The Richardson is a luxury apartment project located in the Tarrytown neighborhood of west Austin. The project includes innovative terraced/waterfalling raingardens for both water quality treatment and as an aesthetic amenity. The inclusion of nature and regenerative design is incorporated throughout the project. This was a fun collaboration between Big Red Dog and Dick Clark Architecture with Blair Landscape Architecture. Construction is to be completed in 2017.
